McManus Urges NRL and Super League to Build Global Partnership

BBC Sport reports that St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus has urged the NRL and Super League to work together on growing rugby league globally, rather than treating the European competition as a failing asset to be absorbed. His comments follow confirmation from Super League earlier in August that it had received an investment offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission aimed at increasing the competition's revenue.

What happened is that discussions between the two sides, which BBC Sport says have continued since last year, have reached the point of a formal proposal. McManus said the process had been approached in the wrong way because it appeared to cast the NRL as a successful competition acquiring or rescuing one that was not functioning effectively.

McManus acknowledged the strength of Australia's club competition and the value of its broadcast arrangements. However, he argued that its room for further growth is limited by geography and the size of the Australian economy, while European rugby league has substantial unrealised potential despite not having been run well for an extended period.

His preferred model is cooperation rather than absorption. McManus said the two competitions should determine how they can combine their strengths to expand and reinforce rugby league worldwide. He also acknowledged that the parties would not enter talks as equals, given the sport's far stronger position in Australia, but maintained that a genuine partnership could increase its international reach.

The Rugby Football League has also signalled openness to negotiations. In a statement reported by the BBC, managing director Rhodri Jones said the governing body was interested in exploring a mutually beneficial and financially fair partnership with the NRL. Jones said the RFL believes a single global entity could unlock added value. The BBC said it had contacted the NRL for comment, so the Australian body's response and the detailed terms remained unconfirmed.

Why it matters for St Helens is that the club is already creating a direct link between the two competitions. Australia head coach Kevin Walters is due to become Saints' head coach next season after previously leading Brisbane Broncos and Queensland. McManus presented the appointment as a significant statement for the club and Super League, while stressing that St Helens needs stability after a year of coaching changes. No final investment agreement was reported.
