Novak Djokovic Defeats Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-2 to Win Mexican Open in Acapulco
Serbian champion captures his 99th ATP title with dominant victory over longtime rival in Pacific coast final.

Novak Djokovic moved within one victory of his 100th ATP title on Tuesday night, defeating longtime rival Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-2 in the Mexican Open final at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess, delivering a commanding performance that showcased his continued excellence at age 38 against one of tennis's greatest champions.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner was in complete control throughout the 98-minute encounter, using his superior court coverage and tactical precision to neutralize Nadal's trademark forehand and clay court expertise. Djokovic's aggressive return position and willingness to take the ball early consistently put the Spaniard under pressure, forcing errors and creating opportunities to dictate play.

"This was a very special match for me," Djokovic said during the trophy ceremony. "To play Rafa in a final at this stage of our careers, it brings back so many memories of our greatest battles. He's still an incredible competitor, but tonight I felt like I executed my game plan perfectly. Getting to 99 ATP titles is something I'm very proud of, and hopefully I can get that 100th very soon."

Nadal, competing in just his third tournament since returning from a hip injury that sidelined him for much of 2025, showed flashes of his legendary fighting spirit but struggled to match Djokovic's consistency and court positioning. The 37-year-old Spaniard created several break opportunities in the first set but was unable to convert, allowing Djokovic to seize control and never relinquish his advantage.

The victory was particularly impressive given that Djokovic had to save two match points in his semifinal against world No. 5 Carlos Alcaraz, demonstrating the mental toughness that has defined his legendary career. His ability to raise his level in finals continues to separate him from his peers, as he has now won his last 8 ATP finals dating back to 2023.

Djokovic's 99th ATP title moves him within striking distance of the historic 100-title milestone, a mark achieved by only two players in tennis history. His Mexican Open triumph also provides crucial momentum heading into the Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami, where the Serbian will look to continue his remarkable late-career resurgence. At an age when most players have long since retired, Djokovic continues to prove that his hunger for success and physical conditioning remain unmatched in professional tennis.
