Mendoza, who dominated at the collegiate level with the University of Southern California, completed 68% of his passes for 4,850 yards and 45 touchdowns last season, earning Heisman Trophy honors and leading the Trojans to a College Football Playoff appearance.
"I'm ecstatic," Mendoza said during his post-draft press conference, wearing a Raiders jersey for the first time. "This organization has a rich history, and I know the responsibility that comes with being the number one pick. I'm ready to work and earn the trust of this fanbase."
The selection marks a significant shift for the Raiders, who finished last season with a 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. General Manager Marcus Peters emphasized that the decision came down to talent and leadership qualities.
"Diego brings everything we were looking for," Peters explained. "His arm strength, his accuracy, his football IQ, and most importantly, his leadership. He has that 'it' factor that you can't teach. We believe he can be the cornerstone of this franchise for the next decade."
Head coach Antonio Pierce echoed those sentiments, noting Mendoza's ability to make plays under pressure. "What impressed us most during the interview process was his composure," Pierce said. "He's seen every type of defense, every type of pressure, and he responds with poise. That's exactly what we need."
The pick comes with immense pressure, as the Raiders have not selected first overall since 1965 when they chose quarterback Randy Johnson. The fanbase, known for its passionate support, has already begun filling Allegiant Stadium with anticipation for the upcoming season.
Mendoza is expected to compete for the starting job immediately, though the team has not ruled out bringing in a veteran quarterback to mentor the young prospect during his transition to the professional level.
