Georgia Hunter Bell Powers to European 1500m Gold in Birmingham

Why it matters: The victory added a third major title to Hunter Bell's season. Over the previous five months, she had already won the world indoor 1500m crown and Commonwealth Games gold over 800m. Her European success extended that run across two distances and both indoor and outdoor championship competition.

The race developed slowly before the decisive acceleration on the final lap. Hunter Bell led from the front, then separated herself from the field in the closing stages. Poland's Klaudia Kazimierska took silver about a second behind the winner, while Portugal's Patricia Silva earned bronze in what The Guardian described as a surprise result.

Hunter Bell identified the closing 150 metres as her preferred portion of the race and said it was satisfying to reach the home straight knowing the title was secure. The 1500m gold was Britain's last victory of the seven-day championships. Jazmin Sawyers later recorded an outdoor personal best of 6.99 metres in the long jump but finished one centimetre behind Italy's Larissa Iapichino. Britain also collected silver medals in both the women's and men's 4x400m relays and ended the meeting with 19 medals.

Tournament impact: Italy finished top of the gold-medal standings with 10 titles, one more than Britain. The final margin was decided when Lorenzo Benati held off Britain's Charlie Dobson by 0.03 seconds in the men's 4x400m relay.
