Dan Lawrence Fifty Extends England Lead on Rain-Hit Lord's Day

Dan Lawrence made an unbeaten 50 as England strengthened their position against Pakistan on a rain-shortened third day of the second Test at Lord's. England closed on 177-7 in their second innings, a lead of 357 runs, after only 24.5 overs were possible on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that persistent rain repeatedly interrupted the day's play.

England had resumed on 81-3 after scoring 290 in their first innings and dismissing Pakistan for 110. Muhammad Abbas struck early when a delivery kept low and trapped Emilio Gay lbw for 31. Harry Brook and Lawrence then added 45 for the fifth wicket in demanding conditions before Brook was caught by wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan for 34.

Lawrence changed his approach after reaching 19 from 39 balls. He advanced down the pitch to hit Mohammad Ali for four and then struck the next delivery over cover for six. After tea, he hit spinner Ali Usman for another six and completed his fifth Test half-century from 64 balls. It was his second fifty in successive Tests.

Play did not begin until 14:40 BST and was interrupted several times before the players left the field for the final time at 17:08. The day's play was abandoned at 18:30, despite provision for up to another hour, and the decision drew boos from spectators who remained at the ground. Only two balls were delivered after Lawrence reached his half-century.

Pakistan will require at least 358 runs to win when the match resumes. Abbas ended the day with second-innings figures of 3-48, having also taken 4-73 in England's first innings. Pakistan's first-innings total of 110 included 46 from Awais, while Ollie Robinson took 4-11 and Jofra Archer claimed 3-26 for England.

BBC Sport reported that Sunday's weather forecast was expected to provide more opportunity for play. England are pursuing both victory in the match and their first series win since 2024. Lawrence, recalled after Ben Stokes' retirement and with Jacob Bethell expected to return from a knee injury, used the difficult innings to strengthen his case for a continued place in England's changing batting lineup.
