Djokovic Announces Return to Competition After Injury Layoff Ahead of Indian Wells
Novak Djokovic confirmed his long-awaited return to professional tennis today, announcing he will compete at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells next month after a three-month injury layoff that had fans worried about the 24-time Grand Slam champion's future.
The 38-year-old Serbian star had been sidelined since November 2025 with a persistent wrist injury that required intensive rehabilitation. Speaking at a press conference in Belgrade, Djokovic expressed his excitement about returning to competitive action and his confidence in his physical condition.
"I've been working incredibly hard with my medical team and coaches to ensure I'm 100 percent ready," Djokovic said. "The injury was more serious than initially thought, but I'm grateful for the time it gave me to reset mentally and physically. I feel as motivated as ever to compete at the highest level."
Djokovic's absence from the tour allowed younger players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to establish themselves further in the world rankings. However, many experts believe the Serbian veteran still has the game to challenge for major titles, especially on his favored hard court surfaces.
The announcement comes as the tennis world prepares for the upcoming hard court swing in North America. Indian Wells, known as the "Fifth Major," will serve as Djokovic's testing ground as he aims to build momentum ahead of the Miami Open and eventually the French Open in May.
Tournament organizers at Indian Wells expressed their delight at securing Djokovic's participation. "Having Novak back elevates the entire tournament," said tournament director Tommy Haas. "His rivalry with the next generation of players continues to produce some of the most compelling tennis we've seen."
With Djokovic's return confirmed, the spring tennis season promises to deliver high-quality competition as the sport's biggest names prepare for another chapter in tennis history.
