Duke Blue Devils Earn No. 1 Seed in March Madness After ACC Tournament Championship Victory
Jon Scheyer's team caps off dominant season with conference tournament title, securing top seed in East Region for NCAA Tournament.

Duke University capped off a remarkable regular season Friday night in Greensboro, defeating North Carolina 78-69 in the ACC Tournament championship game to secure the program's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament since 2022. The Blue Devils, led by freshman sensation Cooper Flagg and senior captain Jeremy Roach, controlled the second half against their bitter rivals to claim the automatic bid and earn the top seed in the East Region.

Cooper Flagg was magnificent in the championship game, recording 28 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 11-of-18 from the field in a performance that solidified his status as the likely No. 1 pick in next year's NBA Draft. The 6-foot-9 forward from Maine has been the driving force behind Duke's resurgence under second-year head coach Jon Scheyer, averaging 19.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while leading the Blue Devils to a 29-4 record.

The victory over North Carolina was particularly sweet for Duke, as the Tar Heels had defeated them twice during the regular season and entered the tournament as the higher seed. However, Scheyer's adjustments to use a smaller, more versatile lineup proved effective in neutralizing UNC's size advantage while allowing Duke's superior athleticism and depth to take control in the crucial final 10 minutes.

Jeremy Roach provided veteran leadership throughout the tournament run, averaging 16.3 points and 6.7 assists across three games while shooting an efficient 48% from three-point range. The senior point guard's experience in big moments proved invaluable for a Duke team that features five freshmen in its regular rotation, providing the steady hand needed to navigate the pressure of conference tournament play.

"This is exactly what we envisioned when we set our goals at the beginning of the season," Scheyer said during the trophy presentation ceremony. "Cooper has been incredible all year, but having Jeremy's leadership and experience has been crucial for our young guys. Winning this tournament and getting a No. 1 seed gives us tremendous momentum heading into March Madness, but we know the real work starts now."

Duke's No. 1 seed places them in the East Region bracket, where they will open tournament play against the winner of a First Four game between Hampton and South Carolina State. The Blue Devils will play their first two games in Charlotte, just 150 miles from campus, giving them a significant home-court advantage for the opening weekend.

The selection marks a remarkable turnaround for the Duke program, which struggled in Scheyer's first season as he transitioned from longtime coach Mike Krzyzewski. The combination of elite recruiting and tactical improvements has restored Duke to national championship contention, with many experts considering them one of the favorites to cut down the nets in Phoenix when the tournament concludes in early April. Flagg's emergence as a generational talent has been the catalyst for Duke's return to prominence, positioning the program for sustained success as they pursue their sixth national championship.
