Chelsea reshape squad with 39 summer departures

Chelsea completed 39 first-team departures during the summer transfer window, combining 17 permanent sales with 22 loan moves in a sweeping squad overhaul. BBC Sport reported that four additional young players were released, while the club still listed 30 players in its first-team group after completing 50 incoming and outgoing deals.

The club’s internal figures put income from player departures at more than £500 million, including loan fees. BBC Sport’s separate calculation, produced with FootballTransfers.com founder Paul Macdonald, placed spending on arrivals at £349 million and outgoing fees at £382 million. That calculation excluded possible loan options, obligations and future payments tied to conditions.

Chelsea estimate their net profit from the window at about £120 million, according to the BBC report. Four of the 22 loans carried options or obligations that could total more than £140 million. The scale of the business meant Chelsea finished the window with a trading profit despite signing 11 players, including Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martinez.

The largest completed departure was Enzo Fernandez’s £125 million transfer to Manchester City, which matched the British transfer record. Nicolas Jackson joined Aston Villa for £65 million, Marc Cucurella moved to Real Madrid for £51.8 million, and Liam Delap and Andrey Santos were each sold in deals worth about £50 million. Mykhailo Mudryk joined Tottenham on loan with a £75 million option, while Alejandro Garnacho’s loan to Aston Villa included a £43 million obligation.

The activity continued Chelsea’s willingness to trade with Premier League clubs. The Mudryk move was the first deal between Chelsea and Tottenham in 17 years and their first loan transaction in 34 years. Chelsea also completed five deals with sister club Strasbourg during the window: two transfers and three loans.

BBC Sport reported that Chelsea have now spent almost £2 billion across nine transfer windows under the current ownership while generating more than £1 billion through sales. Their sales totals before this summer were £236 million, £178 million and £289 million across three successive windows. The club’s latest reset followed a 10th-place Premier League finish and included the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager, alongside a greater emphasis on experienced recruits.
