Tiger Woods Confirms Masters Return After Two-Year Absence, Commits to Full Practice Schedule at Augusta
The 15-time major champion will attempt to compete at Augusta National for the first time since 2024 following extensive rehabilitation from back surgery.

Tiger Woods confirmed Thursday morning that he will return to competitive golf at the Masters Tournament next month, ending a two-year absence from major championship competition following extensive back surgery and rehabilitation. The 50-year-old legend made the announcement during a press conference at his Jupiter Island home, stating that he feels physically ready to compete at Augusta National and has committed to a full practice schedule leading up to the tournament.

Woods has not competed professionally since withdrawing from the 2024 PGA Championship due to recurring back issues that eventually required a fourth spinal fusion surgery. The extended recovery period raised serious questions about whether the 15-time major champion would ever return to tournament golf, particularly given his age and the demanding nature of professional competition at the highest level.

However, Woods revealed that he has been pain-free for the past six months and has gradually increased his practice intensity under the supervision of his medical team and swing coach Chris Como. The former world No. 1 has been playing regularly at his home course and recently completed 18 holes at Augusta National during a private visit to assess his readiness for championship conditions.

"This has been the longest and most challenging period of my career, but I never stopped believing that I could return to competitive golf," Woods said during the emotional press conference. "The Masters means everything to me, and Augusta National has been the site of some of my greatest memories. I wouldn't commit to playing if I didn't believe I could compete at the highest level and contend for another green jacket."

Woods' return comes at a time when the golf world is eagerly anticipating his potential swan song at major championships. His five Masters victories, including the remarkable comeback win in 2019, have cemented his status as Augusta National's most successful modern player. The prospect of Woods competing for a sixth green jacket at age 50 has generated massive excitement among golf fans and media worldwide.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley welcomed the news of Woods' return, noting that the tournament has always been enhanced by the presence of golf's biggest stars. The club has made several accommodations over the years to help Woods manage his physical limitations, including allowing him to use a cart during practice rounds and providing additional medical support.

Woods acknowledged that his expectations are realistic given his extended absence and physical challenges, but emphasized that he wouldn't return unless he believed he could compete for the title. His presence at the Masters will undoubtedly create one of the most compelling storylines in recent major championship history, as golf fans witness potentially the final competitive chapter of one of sport's greatest careers. The tournament begins April 10th, giving Woods four weeks to fine-tune his preparation for what could be his most meaningful competitive round in years.
