Toby Samuel earns first Davis Cup call-up after breakthrough Grand Slam season
Toby Samuel has earned his first call-up to Great Britain's Davis Cup team after a season in which he broke into the world's top 100 and made his debut at three Grand Slam tournaments. BBC Sport reported that the 23-year-old was selected following a rapid rise over the past 12 months, capped by his first Grand Slam match victory at the US Open.

Samuel, who comes from Winchester and trains in Bath, was in New York when British captain Leon Smith telephoned to tell him he had made the squad. Speaking to BBC Points West, he described the call as one of the outstanding moments of his tennis career. He said representing his country was an ambition shared by British players and reflected on how quickly his position had changed from hoping to compete in Challenger events.
The selection places Samuel alongside Arthur Fery, Cameron Norrie, Henry Patten and Lloyd Glasspool in Britain's team for the tie against Ecuador at London's Copper Box arena. His inclusion follows a US Open run in which he defeated Tomas Machac before being beaten by 18th seed Jiri Lehecka in the second round.
Earlier in the season, Samuel won three qualifying matches to reach the French Open main draw, where he lost in the first round to world number eight Alex de Minaur. A Wimbledon wildcard then gave him another opportunity at Grand Slam level. He pushed Czech 15th seed Jakub Mensik, a French Open semi-finalist, to five sets.
Samuel told the BBC that those appearances had helped him adjust to competing alongside leading players. He initially felt nervous in tournament locker rooms and on court, but said repeated exposure made him calmer. The move up has also brought physical demands: after three-set matches on the Challenger Tour, he has had to adapt to the possibility of playing for three, four or five hours.
Alongside that adjustment, Samuel believes his serve and forehand have developed into more effective attacking shots. He said both had improved significantly and were now his strongest weapons, giving him a greater ability to take control of matches. Those changes have accompanied the results that brought him into the national squad.
