Bobby Finke Breaks American Record in 800m Freestyle at U.S. Olympic Trials with Time of 7:39.12
The defending Olympic champion shattered his own American record to secure his spot for Paris and establish himself as the favorite for gold.

Bobby Finke delivered one of the most impressive performances in U.S. Olympic Trials history on Saturday evening at the U.S. Aquatic Center in Orlando, breaking his own American record in the men 800-meter freestyle with a stunning time of 7:39.12 that secured his spot for the Paris Olympics and sent a clear message to international competitors about American distance swimming dominance.

The 24-year-old defending Olympic champion was in complete control throughout the 32-lap race, establishing an early lead before gradually pulling away from the field with negative-split pacing that demonstrated his exceptional fitness and race strategy. Finke time obliterated his previous American record of 7:41.87 and ranks as the second-fastest performance in world history.

I have been building toward this moment all season, and to break the American record here at Trials feels absolutely incredible, Finke said while being congratulated by coaches and teammates poolside. The preparation with my coach Anthony Nesty has been perfect, and I felt amazing throughout the entire race tonight. This gives me tremendous confidence heading into Paris.

The record-breaking performance represents the culmination of Finke remarkable transformation from relatively unknown college swimmer to Olympic champion and now American record holder. His dedicated training regimen and tactical improvements have elevated him to the pinnacle of world distance swimming, making him the clear favorite for Olympic gold in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

Finke dominance was so complete that silver medalist David Johnston finished nearly 10 seconds behind despite swimming a personal best time that would have won multiple previous Olympic Trials. The depth of American distance swimming was further highlighted by third-place finisher Luke Whitlock, who also achieved an Olympic qualifying standard in what was a historic evening for the sport.

U.S. Swimming National Team Director Lindsay Mintenko was visibly emotional after witnessing Finke historic swim, noting that performances like Saturday evening represent the pinnacle of athletic achievement and years of dedicated preparation. Bobby continues to redefine what American distance swimmers can accomplish on the world stage, Mintenko said. His combination of talent, work ethic, and competitive drive makes him a special athlete.

The American record adds another chapter to Finke incredible rise through the ranks of international swimming, as he prepares for what will be his second Olympics but first as the established favorite in his signature events. His tactical intelligence and closing speed have made him virtually unbeatable in major competition when he executes his race plan properly.

With the Paris Olympics just four months away, Finke record-breaking performance sends an ominous warning to competitors from Australia, Italy, and other swimming powerhouses that American distance swimming has reached new heights under his leadership. His combination of speed and endurance makes him the swimmer to beat in both freestyle distance events.
