Shohei Ohtani Delivers Spectacular Performance in First Spring Training Game as Dodger
Shohei Ohtani made his long-awaited debut as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers in spectacular fashion, going 3-for-4 at the plate while also pitching two perfect innings in the team's 8-3 spring training victory over the San Francisco Giants at Camelback Ranch.
The Japanese superstar, who signed a historic 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December, showed no signs of rust after his offseason elbow surgery. Batting leadoff and serving as the designated hitter, Ohtani collected three singles, scored two runs, and drove in one RBI while displaying the same smooth swing that made him a two-time MVP winner with the Angels.
"It felt great to be back on the field in a Dodgers uniform," Ohtani said through his interpreter after the game. "The fans have been incredible, and I can feel the energy and excitement around this team. We have something special here, and I'm just focused on staying healthy and helping us win a championship."
Perhaps even more impressive was Ohtani's work on the mound, where he touched 98 mph with his fastball while striking out three batters over two innings. His splitter looked as devastating as ever, generating several swings and misses from Giants hitters who seemed completely baffled by the pitch's late movement. The performance provided encouraging signs that his elbow is fully recovered from the surgical procedure.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was thrilled with what he saw from his new superstar, praising both Ohtani's preparation and his seamless integration with the team. "Shohei has been everything we hoped for and more," Roberts said. "His work ethic is incredible, and you can see how much his teammates already respect him. When you have a player of his caliber who's also such a great teammate, it elevates everyone around him."
The Camelback Ranch crowd of 13,000 fans gave Ohtani standing ovations throughout the afternoon, with many wearing newly purchased Dodgers jerseys bearing his name and number 17. The performance was a promising start to what the organization hopes will be a championship season, with Ohtani serving as the cornerstone of their pursuit of their first World Series title since 1988.
