Vasconcelos Century Leaves Lancashire Facing 422-Run Final-Day Chase
Ricardo Vasconcelos scored exactly 100 as Northamptonshire took command of their County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters Network, said Lancashire closed the third day on 24-2 and still needed 422 runs to reach a notional victory target of 446.

Northamptonshire began the day by completing Lancashire first innings for 137. The hosts resumed on 80-2 but lost their final eight wickets for 57 runs in less than 90 minutes. Ben Sanderson finished with 4-39 and Liam Guthrie took 3-51, giving the visitors a first-innings lead of 147 after their opening total of 284.
Keaton Jennings was dismissed for 37 when he edged Guthrie to substitute fielder Louis Kimber at third slip. Lancashire then lost five wickets for 11 runs: Arav Shetty, Joe Moores, Rocky Flintoff, Championship debutant Ben Walkden and Noman Ali all departed during the collapse. Mitch Stanley helped the home side pass the follow-on mark before falling for 15.
Northamptonshire strengthened their position after lunch through a 121-run opening stand between Vasconcelos and Luke Procter. Procter was dropped on 39 but made 46 before Tom Bailey trapped him lbw at the stroke of tea. Vasconcelos reached his fourth century of the season from 126 balls with a single off Shetty.
Noman Ali dismissed Calvin Harrison for 29 and then removed Vasconcelos five balls after the opener reached three figures. Nathan McSweeney made 29, while Saif Zaib was unbeaten on 55 and George Bartlett on 32 when Northamptonshire declared at 298-4 after 64 overs. That left Lancashire 11 overs to negotiate before the close.
The hosts lost Jennings for a duck when he edged Sanderson toward fourth slip, where Zaib parried the ball and Kimber completed the catch. Five overs later, Marcus Harris was lbw to Yuzi Chahal for 10. Lancashire finished on 24-2 with eight wickets standing, while Northamptonshire carried a dominant position into the fourth and final day as they pursued their promotion challenge.
