Rohit Sharma Smashes 94 Not Out as Mumbai Indians Defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL Thriller
The Mumbai captain leads from the front with a masterful innings to guide his team to a five-wicket victory at Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit Sharma produced one of the finest T20 innings of his illustrious career Thursday evening at Wankhede Stadium, scoring an unbeaten 94 off just 52 deliveries to guide the Mumbai Indians to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in a pulsating IPL encounter. The Mumbai captain's knock featured 11 fours and 4 sixes, showcasing the timing and power that has made him one of the most successful batsmen in IPL history.

Chasing a competitive target of 181, Mumbai found themselves in early trouble at 43-3 after losing their top three batsmen within the powerplay. However, Sharma anchored the innings with characteristic composure, first rebuilding with Suryakumar Yadav before accelerating in the death overs to take the game away from the visitors in spectacular fashion.

The turning point came in the 17th over when Sharma took 22 runs off RCB pacer Mohammed Siraj, including two massive sixes that sailed into the packed stands at the iconic Mumbai venue. The sequence of boundaries shifted momentum decisively in favor of the home side and left RCB scrambling for answers as their bowling attack wilted under pressure.

Sharma reached his fifty off 35 balls but then exploded in the latter stages, needing just 17 more deliveries to race into the nineties. His partnership with Hardik Pandya for the fifth wicket yielded 71 runs in just 42 balls, with both batsmen displaying the aggressive intent that has become synonymous with successful T20 cricket in the modern era.

"It feels incredible to perform like this in front of our home crowd," Sharma said during the post-match presentation ceremony. "When we were 43-3, the game could have gone either way, but I always believed we had the firepower to chase this total. The wicket was playing beautifully, and once I got my eye in, I just tried to be positive and trust my instincts."

For RCB, the defeat was particularly frustrating given their strong bowling performance in the powerplay and competitive first-innings total built around Virat Kohli's elegant 67. However, their inability to take wickets in the middle overs and poor execution during the death phase ultimately cost them victory against a Mumbai side that has now won three of their first four matches in the tournament.

The victory maintains Mumbai's excellent start to the 2026 IPL season and demonstrates their championship credentials under Sharma's astute leadership. With the tournament still in its early stages, performances like Thursday's suggest that Mumbai Indians remain the team to beat as they pursue their sixth IPL title. The result leaves RCB with work to do if they are to challenge for their first championship, having now lost two of their opening four fixtures in what promises to be a highly competitive season.
