Nico Paz scored twice and created another goal as Como defeated Manchester United 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 21. United's own match report highlighted the return of Matthijs de Ligt, who made his first appearance in 325 days after recovering from back surgery. Carrick made four changes from the team that drew 1-1 at Leeds, also bringing Noussair Mazraoui, Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha into the starting line-up. De Ligt played 79 minutes before Harry Amass replaced him.

Paz put Como ahead early, and United reached half-time a goal behind. According to the club's account, Senne Lammens saved efforts from Tasos Douvikas and Martin Baturina before the break, while Harry Maguire headed wide at the other end. Carrick then introduced Carlos Baleba and Amad for Andrey Santos and Cunha at the interval.

The changes did not stop Como adding to their lead. Douvikas finished from Paz's pass in the 49th minute, and Paz scored again in the 57th. Jacobo Ramon headed in Kaiki Bruno's cross in the 76th minute. United's report said substitute Joshua Zirkzee's stoppage-time reply, supplied by Amad, stood after a VAR check for offside.

Sky Sports reported that Como completed 594 passes, the highest total by a Champions League opponent against United since Barcelona's 725 in April 2019. The defeat left United with three points from their opening three league-phase games. Their seven-match run without a victory consists of three draws and four defeats, a sequence spanning both domestic and European fixtures.

Carrick expressed anger at the performance in comments carried by Sky Sports, while stressing the need to prepare the team for its next match. United return to Premier League action against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. For Como, Paz's two goals and assist accounted for direct involvement in three of their four goals on the night.
