Lando Norris topped Sao Paulo qualifying ahead of George Russell in difficult wet conditions. Engine-related penalties reshuffled the grid behind the McLaren driver.

Lando Norris secured his third consecutive pole position in Brazil after heavy rain disrupted qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos on Saturday. The McLaren driver beat Mercedes' George Russell by 0.204 seconds, according to BBC Sport's qualifying report, ending a wait for pole that stretched back to September's Spanish Grand Prix.

The session began at its scheduled time but was halted before any driver completed a timed lap because conditions were too dangerous. It resumed an hour and 26 minutes after the original start time. Norris ultimately recorded a lap of one minute 27.470 seconds, with the returning rain preventing a late challenge to his leading time.

In BBC Sport's subsequent report on the conditions, Russell described aquaplaning and extremely poor visibility during the first qualifying segment. He also criticised a team decision to abandon a lap he believed could have been faster. Mercedes expected him to have another opportunity before the rain intensified, but that opportunity did not materialise.

Norris credited the wet conditions with creating an opening for McLaren, saying the team had not matched Mercedes' pace in the dry despite improvements from upgrades. He described the final qualifying segment as particularly difficult because changing light made it harder to distinguish wet areas and puddles. He nevertheless said he had felt confident throughout the session.

The qualifying order did not translate directly into the starting grid. BBC Sport's separate report on engine penalties confirmed that Russell's five-place sanction dropped him to seventh, while Charles Leclerc's 10-place penalty moved the Ferrari driver from fourth to 14th. Those changes promoted Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg onto the second row.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen also received penalties placing them at the back of the grid. Hamilton's newly fitted internal combustion engine failed in final practice, prompting Ferrari to install an entire replacement power unit. Red Bull fitted Verstappen's new engine after discovering problems following Friday practice. BBC Sport reported that the four penalised drivers were separated by 16 points in the contest for championship runner-up behind Kimi Antonelli.
