Sam Curran Ruled Out for Rest of English Season After Groin Surgery

Sam Curran will undergo groin surgery and miss the rest of the English season, ending a possible route back into England's Test side. The setback also rules him out of Surrey's remaining campaign and September's white-ball matches against Sri Lanka.

England all-rounder Sam Curran will miss the remainder of the English season after further assessment of a groin injury showed that he requires surgery. BBC Sport reported that the 28-year-old is scheduled to have the operation on Friday, ending his prospects of representing Surrey or England again this summer.

The setback also closes off a possible return to England's Test team during the current series against Pakistan. Curran has played 24 Tests but has not appeared in the format since 2021. According to the BBC report, selector Marcus North had indicated that Curran could have been considered for the first Test if he had not been managing his fitness during The Hundred.

North had also said Curran could come into contention for the third Test, which begins on September 9. That possibility has now been removed by the decision to operate. Curran will also be unavailable for England's white-ball matches against Sri Lanka in September, as well as Surrey's remaining domestic fixtures.

The groin problem has affected Curran's schedule throughout the year. He withdrew from the 2026 Indian Premier League in March because of a groin issue. During The Hundred, the MI London captain missed one match and did not complete his full bowling allocation in four of the team's other seven group games, BBC Sport reported.

Curran's absence leaves England without one of the seam-bowling all-rounders who had been considered as the selectors sought to reshape the balance of the Test side following Ben Stokes' retirement. For the opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley, England did not select a frontline spinner and instead used Dan Lawrence at number six, with his part-time off-spin providing the spin option.

Another possible all-round option, Will Jacks, is also temporarily unavailable to Surrey. The BBC said Jacks was left out of the county's squad for Thursday's County Championship match against Nottinghamshire after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix. Curran's recovery timetable beyond the end of the English season was not specified in the report.
