Tiger Woods Withdraws from Players Championship After Back Injury Flares Up During Second Round
The 15-time major champion was forced to exit the tournament after just 11 holes of his second round due to recurring back issues.

Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw from the Players Championship on Friday afternoon after his chronic back issues flared up during the second round at TPC Sawgrass, dealing another setback to the 15-time major champion's hopes of returning to competitive form ahead of the Masters Tournament.

Woods was visibly struggling with discomfort after teeing off on the 12th hole, his 11th of the day, when he called for a cart and was seen in discussion with tournament officials and his caddie Joe LaCava. After a brief medical evaluation on the course, the 48-year-old made the difficult decision to withdraw rather than risk further injury to his surgically repaired back.

"I'm disappointed to have to withdraw, but I have to listen to my body," Woods said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. "The back started acting up on the back nine, and I felt it was best not to push through and potentially cause more damage. I'll continue to work with my medical team to get back to playing the golf I know I'm capable of."

The withdrawal continues a frustrating pattern for Woods, who has struggled with consistency since his return to competitive golf following his 2021 car accident. This marks the fourth time in his last eight tournament starts that he has either withdrawn or missed the cut, raising questions about his ability to compete at the highest level on a regular basis.

Woods had shown glimpses of his former brilliance in Thursday's opening round, shooting an even-par 72 that included several vintage shots around the demanding Stadium Course. However, he appeared to be laboring from early in Friday's round, hitting several uncharacteristic wayward shots and showing visible signs of discomfort during his pre-shot routine.

The timing of the withdrawal is particularly concerning given that the Masters Tournament is just five weeks away. Augusta National has been the site of Woods' most successful comeback stories, including his emotional victory in 2019, but his recent physical struggles have cast doubt on his ability to compete effectively at golf's most prestigious event.

PGA Tour officials and fellow competitors expressed their support for Woods' decision to prioritize his long-term health. "Tiger's been through so much, and we all want to see him healthy and competitive," said world No. 2 Jon Rahm. "Sometimes the smart play is knowing when to walk away and fight another day."

Woods is expected to return to his home in Florida to continue his rehabilitation program with his medical team. His next scheduled appearance is tentatively set for the Masters, though his participation will likely depend on his physical condition in the coming weeks.
