Newcastle delay Fineanganofo move until after 2027 Rugby World Cup

Newcastle Red Bulls have agreed to postpone Fehi Fineanganofo's arrival until after the 2027 Rugby World Cup, allowing the New Zealand wing to remain eligible for international selection. BBC Sport reported that the revised arrangement keeps his two-season commitment to Newcastle intact, but moves it to the 2027-28 and 2028-29 campaigns. He will spend another season with the Hurricanes instead of joining the English club this year.

The 24-year-old's original agreement was announced in January and was due to begin with the current season. His subsequent performances for the Wellington-based Hurricanes changed his international prospects: he set a record for tries in a single Super Rugby campaign and made his New Zealand debut against France in July. Under the All Blacks' selection rules, moving overseas this year would have taken him out of contention for the World Cup, which starts in October 2027.

Fineanganofo thanked Newcastle for accommodating his ambition to compete at the tournament. In comments carried by BBC Sport, he said remaining in New Zealand to pursue World Cup selection mattered greatly to him, while reaffirming his commitment to joining Newcastle afterwards. The change preserves that opportunity; it does not confirm his place in New Zealand's tournament squad.

Newcastle sporting general manager Neil McIlroy said the club supported Fineanganofo's international ambitions and regarded the prospect of him arriving with further Test experience as a benefit. The agreement also resolves uncertainty over the timing of the transfer. New Zealand Rugby denied in June that it was trying to arrange his release from the Newcastle contract, while head coach Dan McFarland had said only weeks ago that he expected the wing to arrive in November.

Newcastle began their league campaign with Werner Kok and Christian Wade as their first-choice wings. Kok, formerly of Ulster, signed in June as uncertainty grew over Fineanganofo's move. McIlroy expressed confidence in the quality and depth of the existing squad, but left open the possibility of recruiting another outside back if a suitable player became available. He did not announce an additional signing.

The revised transfer timetable comes after Newcastle opened their league season with a 59-26 defeat away to defending champions Northampton on Friday. Their next match is at home to Leicester on Saturday, with Fineanganofo's arrival now set for after next year's World Cup rather than during the current campaign.
