NCAA Basketball Coaching Legend Mike Krzyzewski Returns to Duke as Special Advisor
Mike Krzyzewski, the legendary Duke basketball coach known as "Coach K," has announced his return to the Duke Blue Devils program as a special advisor, three years after his retirement from active coaching. The 79-year-old coaching icon will work alongside current head coach Jon Scheyer to provide mentorship and strategic guidance.
The announcement came during a press conference at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where Krzyzewski coached for 42 seasons and led Duke to five NCAA championships. "This is home for me," Krzyzewski said. "Jon has done an incredible job leading this program, and I'm excited to support him and our student-athletes in this new capacity."
Krzyzewski's return comes at a crucial time for Duke basketball, as the Blue Devils are currently ranked 8th in the nation and preparing for the upcoming March Madness tournament. His expertise in tournament preparation and player development is expected to be invaluable during the postseason.
Current head coach Jon Scheyer expressed enthusiasm about the arrangement. "Having Coach K back in the building is incredible for our program," Scheyer stated. "His knowledge, experience, and perspective are unmatched. This will benefit not just our current players, but our entire basketball family."
The coaching legend retired in 2022 with a record 1,202 career wins, making him the winningest coach in Division I men's basketball history. His influence extended far beyond college basketball, having coached the U.S. men's national team to three Olympic gold medals.
Duke athletic director Nina King praised the decision, noting that Krzyzewski's involvement will enhance the program's recruiting efforts and provide continuity for one of college basketball's most storied programs.
