Bayern Munich say Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground. No date has been set for his return, with Aaron Danks overseeing the team in his absence.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has left hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground last Friday, BBC Sport reported. Bayern board member for sports Max Eberl confirmed his discharge on Wednesday and said the 40-year-old was doing well in the circumstances. The club has not announced when he will resume his duties on the touchline.

Kompany became unwell while watching Bayern’s second team train and was taken to hospital. Eberl identified meningeal irritation as the cause of the incident and said the coach would now rest and take medication. He gave the update to German broadcaster ARD before Bayern’s German Cup match against Magdeburg, according to the BBC’s report by Harry Poole.

The discharge follows Bayern’s statement on Saturday that Kompany’s recovery would take weeks rather than days. Eberl expressed confidence that the Belgian would return to full working capacity soon, but did not provide a timetable. His comments offered an encouraging update on Kompany’s condition without confirming a date for his return to the dugout or changing the club’s earlier recovery guidance.

English assistant coach Aaron Danks has been leading the team during Kompany’s absence. He oversaw Bayern’s 3-1 victory at Freiburg on Sunday, the first league match mentioned in the report after the coach’s collapse. Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga and are due to meet title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with Kompany’s availability still unconfirmed.

Kompany had been dealing with a virus in the days before he was taken to hospital and had missed some training sessions. He also did not attend the pre-match news conference on the Tuesday before Bayern’s Champions League fixture against Arsenal. However, he was back on the touchline for that match the following Wednesday, before becoming unwell at the training ground on Friday.

The former Manchester City defender was appointed Bayern manager in May 2024. For now, the latest confirmed development is his release from hospital, with rest and medication the next steps described by Eberl. Danks has taken charge during the absence, while Bayern await Kompany’s recovery.
