Islam Makhachev Announces Retirement from MMA After Defending Lightweight Title for Fourth Time
The undefeated Dagestani fighter shocked the MMA world by announcing his immediate retirement following his dominant title defense against Charles Oliveira.

Islam Makhachev sent shockwaves through the mixed martial arts world on Friday evening, announcing his immediate retirement from professional competition just moments after successfully defending his UFC lightweight championship for the fourth time with a dominant submission victory over Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 299 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The 34-year-old Dagestani fighter, who improved his professional record to an unblemished 26-0 with the victory, cited his desire to spend more time with his family and focus on coaching the next generation of fighters from his homeland as the primary reasons for his shocking decision to walk away from the sport at the peak of his powers.

I have accomplished everything I set out to do in this sport, Makhachev said during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. I am undefeated champion, I have defended my belt multiple times, and I have nothing left to prove to anyone. My family needs me more than fighting needs me, and it is time to pass the torch to the young lions coming up behind me.

Makhachev controlled the fight from the opening bell, using his superior wrestling and ground control to neutralize Oliveira dangerous submission game while methodically wearing down the Brazilian veteran over five rounds. The end came in the fourth round when Makhachev secured a rear-naked choke that forced Oliveira to tap out, marking the Dagestani first submission victory since 2019.

The retirement announcement came as a complete surprise to UFC officials and fans alike, as Makhachev had been scheduled to face either Dustin Poirier or Justin Gaethje in his next title defense later this year. UFC President Dana White expressed his disappointment with the timing but acknowledged Makhachev right to make the decision on his own terms.

Makhachev leaves behind an incredible legacy as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history, having never lost a professional fight and successfully defended his title against every top contender in the division. His retirement creates an immediate vacancy at 155 pounds, with former champions like Oliveira, Poirier, and Gaethje likely to compete in an upcoming tournament to crown a new champion.

The announcement also raises questions about the future of American Kickboxing Academy, where Makhachev trained alongside his late mentor Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov and current teammates like former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev indicated that he plans to return to Dagestan to open his own training facility and help develop the next generation of Dagestani fighters who have dominated the UFC lightweight division for the past decade.
