Russell Leads Mercedes 1-2 in Final Bahrain Practice as Teams Fine-Tune for Season Opener
George Russell topped the final practice session in Bahrain with teammate Lewis Hamilton completing a Mercedes 1-2 as teams made final preparations for this weekend's season-opening Grand Prix.

George Russell delivered an ominous warning to Formula 1's field today, setting the fastest time in the final practice session before this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix as Mercedes completed a dominant 1-2 finish. Russell's lap of 1:29.867 was just 0.043 seconds quicker than teammate Lewis Hamilton, suggesting the Silver Arrows may have found the performance needed to challenge Red Bull's championship stranglehold.

The session began under the floodlights at the Bahrain International Circuit, with teams focusing on race simulation runs and final setup adjustments ahead of Saturday's qualifying. Russell appeared comfortable throughout the 60-minute session, consistently posting competitive times on both medium and soft compound tires. His fastest lap came during a qualifying simulation run with 20 minutes remaining, showcasing the improved balance that Mercedes has worked tirelessly to achieve over the winter.

Hamilton, meanwhile, looked equally impressive in the W15, matching his younger teammate's pace throughout most of the session before falling just short of the ultimate lap time. The seven-time world champion focused heavily on long-run performance, completing multiple stint simulations that provided encouraging data for Sunday's race. The British driver's comfort with the car was evident as he pushed the boundaries without the handling issues that plagued Mercedes throughout much of the 2025 campaign.

"The car feels much more predictable than last year," Russell commented after the session. "We've made significant progress with the balance, and you can feel the confidence building with every lap. Obviously, it's only practice, but these are encouraging signs. Lewis and I both feel we can push the car to its limits without any nasty surprises, which wasn't always the case last season."

Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull, 0.198 seconds behind Russell's benchmark time, suggesting that the reigning world champion may face stiffer competition than anticipated. The Dutchman appeared to struggle slightly with the car's handling in the high-speed corners, though Red Bull team principal Christian Horner downplayed any concerns, noting that the team typically shows their true pace when it matters most.

Other notable performers included Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth and McLaren's Lando Norris in fifth, both within half a second of Russell's fastest time. The competitive nature of the session suggests that the 2026 championship battle could be closer than many predicted, with multiple teams appearing capable of challenging for victories. As teams head into Saturday's qualifying session, Mercedes will be hoping that their practice pace translates into pole position and a genuine shot at victory in what promises to be a thrilling season opener under the Bahrain lights.
