High School Baseball Season Preview: Bloomington Area Teams Ready for 2026
The 2026 high school baseball season has arrived in the Bloomington area, bringing fresh hope and renewed competition across five local programs as they prepare for sectional play beginning in late May.
Bloomington South enters the season as a preseason top-10 team, led by 18th-year coach Phil Kluesner. The Panthers return a veteran-heavy roster featuring more than half a dozen college-bound players, though they face early challenges with key injuries. Indiana signee Collin Marcum, a crucial pitcher, suffered an arm injury at a showcase event that will sideline him for an unknown period.
Coach Kluesner noted the team has experience and high expectations. Despite the setback, South boasts impressive depth with 11 capable pitchers, more than most programs statewide. Connor Couch, committed to Columbia, leads the returning starters alongside Xavier Hemingway, bound for Marian, and relief specialist Amos Ewer.
Bloomington North, under 32nd-year coach Richard Hurt, seeks consistency after a 15-11 campaign that saw dramatic scoring fluctuations. The Cougars scored 64 runs in their first four games while allowing just one, then struggled offensively before finishing strong. DePauw-bound Luke Freel returns as the ace after earning Player of the Year honors with a 1.58 ERA, supported by Kalamazoo-committed Ryan Grupenhoff and Thomas More-bound Brogan Hanna.
Edgewood faces a rebuilding year under 41st-year coach Bob Jones, with only three full-time starters returning. Senior Gunnar Perry early graduation to begin his Valparaiso football career leaves a significant gap, forcing younger players into prominent roles. The Mustangs benefit from their new fieldhouse with two tunnels, allowing better preparation during the off-season.
Eastern Greene undergoes the most dramatic transformation with first-year coach Auston Matricardi taking over after the graduation of a large senior class. The T-Birds return just two full-time starters, making this essentially a complete program reset. Sophomore Saxon Pennycuff emerges as a potential impact player after starring in football and basketball, recently throwing a two-hitter that impressed his new coach.
Owen Valley operates under interim coach Levi Clark, an eight-year assistant taking over while head coach Trent Heckman takes the season off. The Patriots have no seniors on their roster, making development and growth the primary goals. Only 35 innings of pitching experience return, placing enormous pressure on sophomores Grady Bough and Parker Greene to lead the staff.
Across all five programs, the emphasis remains on fundamentals, player development, and building toward sectional competition. South and North appear best positioned for immediate success, while Edgewood, Eastern Greene, and Owen Valley focus on developing younger talent for future seasons.
