Coco Gauff Advances to Indian Wells Semifinals with Straight-Set Victory Over Petra Kvitova
The young American star continues her impressive form with a commanding performance against the former world No. 2.

Coco Gauff continued her exceptional start to the 2026 season with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to advance to the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The 21-year-old American, seeded fourth in the tournament, displayed the maturity and shot-making ability that has made her one of the most exciting players on the WTA Tour. Gauff controlled the match from the baseline, utilizing her improved serve and aggressive return game to keep the experienced Czech player under constant pressure throughout the 87-minute encounter.

Gauff broke serve early in both sets and never allowed Kvitova to settle into her rhythm. The American's movement around the court was particularly impressive, as she retrieved several of Kvitova's powerful shots and turned defense into attack with her signature speed and court coverage. Her serve, which has been a work in progress, functioned well when needed, including a crucial ace to close out the first set.

"I'm really pleased with how I'm managing the big points," Gauff said in her post-match interview. "Petra is such a dangerous player with that left-handed serve and her ability to hit winners from anywhere on the court. I knew I had to stay focused and play my game, not get caught up in trying to match her power."

Kvitova, 36, showed flashes of the form that once took her to the top of the world rankings, but struggled with consistency on her groundstrokes. The veteran hit 18 winners but also committed 24 unforced errors, unable to find the right balance between aggression and control against Gauff's defensive prowess.

This victory marks Gauff's third semifinal appearance in a WTA 1000 event, and she'll face either world No. 1 Iga Swiatek or Elena Rybakina for a spot in Sunday's final. The American has won 12 of her last 14 matches and appears to be hitting peak form just as the tour heads toward the clay court season and eventually Roland Garros, where she captured her first Grand Slam title in 2023.
