Mookie Betts Suffers Broken Wrist in Spring Training Accident, Expected to Miss 6-8 Weeks
The Dodgers superstar suffered the injury during batting practice when he was struck by a deflected ball from a pitching machine.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks after suffering a broken wrist during a freak spring training accident Thursday morning at Camelback Ranch. The incident occurred during routine batting practice when a ball deflected off a pitching machine and struck Betts on his left wrist, immediately causing significant pain and swelling that prompted team medical staff to rush him to a nearby hospital for X-rays.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed the devastating news during an emotional press conference, stating that Betts would require surgery to repair a fracture in his scaphoid bone. The procedure is scheduled for Friday morning in Los Angeles, where team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the operation that typically requires 6-8 weeks of recovery time.

"This is obviously not the news we wanted to hear with Opening Day just two weeks away," Roberts said, his voice heavy with concern. "Mookie is the heart and soul of our team, and losing him for any period of time is devastating. However, we have full confidence in our medical team and know that Mookie will approach this recovery with the same dedication and positivity he brings to everything else."

The injury couldn't have come at a worse time for the Dodgers, who enter the 2026 season as heavy favorites to win their second World Series title in seven years. Betts had been having an outstanding spring training, batting .385 with three home runs and eight RBIs while showing no signs of the knee issues that plagued him late last season.

Betts, who signed a 12-year, $365 million extension with Los Angeles in 2020, has been one of baseball's most consistent performers since joining the Dodgers. The six-time All-Star was coming off another excellent season in 2025, where he hit .307 with 32 home runs and 94 RBIs while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense in right field.

The Dodgers will likely turn to Chris Taylor and Teoscar Hernandez to fill the void in right field during Betts' absence, while potentially moving Max Muncy back to his natural second base position to accommodate lineup changes. The organization has also discussed the possibility of calling up top prospect Diego Cartaya if additional roster flexibility becomes necessary.

General manager Brandon Gomes emphasized that the team remains confident in their championship aspirations despite the setback. "We have incredible depth throughout our organization, and while Mookie is irreplaceable, we have players who can step up and contribute," Gomes said. "Our goal remains the same - to win a World Series championship. We'll adjust our plans accordingly and continue preparing for what we expect to be a successful season."
