Elena Rybakina Upsets World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to Reach BNP Paribas Open Final in Indian Wells
The Kazakhstani star defeated the defending champion 7-6, 6-4 in a thrilling semifinal to advance to her second consecutive Indian Wells final.

Elena Rybakina produced one of her finest performances of the 2026 season on Friday evening at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, stunning world No. 1 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in a high-quality semifinal that showcased the very best of women tennis and sent the Kazakhstani into her second consecutive BNP Paribas Open final.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion was in complete control of her powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes throughout the two-hour encounter, using her 6-foot frame to generate tremendous pace while maintaining remarkable accuracy under pressure. Rybakina won 82% of her first-serve points and struck 31 winners compared to just 19 unforced errors in a near-flawless display.

I felt really confident out there tonight, especially with my serving and return game, Rybakina said during her on-court interview. Aryna is such an incredible player and the world No. 1 for good reason, but I stayed aggressive and trusted my game plan. To reach another final here in Indian Wells feels amazing, and I am excited for the opportunity to win this title.

The turning point came in the first-set tiebreak, where Rybakina took control with a stunning cross-court forehand winner at 5-4 before serving out the set with an ace down the T. The momentum carried into the second set, where she broke Sabalenka serve in the seventh game with a series of penetrating returns that forced the Belarusian into defensive positions.

Sabalenka, who was seeking her fourth consecutive WTA 1000 title dating back to last season, fought valiantly throughout the match but could not match Rybakina consistency and power from the baseline. The world No. 1 committed 28 unforced errors while managing just 22 winners, as she appeared to struggle with the desert wind conditions that affected ball flight throughout the evening.

The victory sets up a final showdown between Rybakina and either Jessica Pegula or Danielle Collins, who were scheduled to play in the second semifinal later Friday evening. Rybakina has previous success at the BNP Paribas Open, having reached the final in 2025 before falling to Iga Swiatek, and her current form suggests she will be extremely difficult to beat.

Rybakina path to the final has been impressive, with victories over former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, rising American Emma Navarro, and now the top-ranked Sabalenka demonstrating her ability to perform against elite competition. Her combination of power serving and improved court movement has made her one of the most dangerous players on the WTA Tour when she is playing with confidence and aggression.
