Washington Commanders Trade Up to Second Overall Pick in Blockbuster NFL Draft Deal
The Commanders sent three first-round picks to the Patriots in exchange for the No. 2 selection, positioning themselves to draft franchise quarterback prospect Caleb Williams.

The Washington Commanders made the most significant move of the 2026 NFL Draft season on Friday, trading three first-round picks to the New England Patriots to move up to the second overall selection, setting the stage for what many believe will be the selection of USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

The blockbuster deal sends Washington's 2026 first-round pick (8th overall), their 2027 first-rounder, and their 2028 first-round selection to New England in exchange for the No. 2 pick in next month's draft. The trade represents the largest draft-day investment by any franchise in recent memory and signals the Commanders' commitment to finding their franchise quarterback of the future.

"This is about taking a swing for a generational talent," Commanders General Manager Martin Mayhew said during a hastily arranged press conference. "We believe this draft class has quarterbacks who can change the trajectory of a franchise, and we weren't willing to sit back and hope one falls to us. Sometimes you have to be aggressive to get the player you want."

The move comes after months of speculation about Williams' draft status, with the Chicago Bears holding the first overall pick and widely expected to select the Heisman Trophy winner. Williams threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns in his final season at USC, displaying the arm strength, mobility, and leadership qualities that have made him the consensus top quarterback prospect in this year's class.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick praised the haul his team received while acknowledging the difficulty of the decision. "Those are three valuable first-round picks that give us flexibility to build our roster for years to come," Belichick said. "Washington clearly had a target in mind, and we felt this compensation was too good to pass up. It's a win-win situation for both organizations."

The trade dramatically reshapes the top of the draft board and puts immense pressure on the Commanders to develop Williams successfully. Washington has struggled at the quarterback position for years, cycling through multiple starters since their last playoff appearance. Team owner Josh Harris has made it clear that finding a franchise quarterback is the organization's top priority, and this trade represents the most significant investment toward that goal.

With the 2026 NFL Draft set for April 25-27 in Las Vegas, all eyes will now be on how the Commanders use their newly acquired pick and whether Williams can live up to the massive expectations that come with such a substantial investment.
