Adam Peaty Opens LA Campaign With Astonishing 58.97 British Title in London
Three-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty showed he is far from finished, clocking an astonishing 58.97 seconds to win the British 100m breaststroke title in London and stake his claim for a fourth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
The 31-year-old, who confirmed only recently he would extend his career through to 2028, dominated the field at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships to win by more than four-tenths of a second. Teenagers Filip Nowacki and Max Morgan pushed him throughout but ultimately could not match the world record holder's finishing kick.
Nowacki touched in 59.39 for second place, with Morgan producing a huge personal best of 59.56 in third. Both swimmers earned their places on the Great Britain team for this summer's European Aquatics Championships in Paris with their results.
Peaty, who married last year as swimming took a brief back seat in his life, had announced his intention to continue after it was confirmed the 50m breaststroke would be added to the Olympic schedule for 2028. That additional event gives him a second individual opportunity to add to the gold medals he won in the 100m in Rio and Tokyo.
His time of 58.97 seconds is the second fastest in the world this year, a signal that the athlete who redefined breaststroke swimming is still the man to beat on the global stage. The performances of Nowacki and Morgan, however, suggest the next generation is closing the gap.
"We have got some talented youngsters coming through the pool," Peaty said after collecting his title. "I am not talking about this year, it is about LA for me, and these boys are going to challenge me the whole way."
The result reinforced what has become clear: Adam Peaty is not ready to give up his place at the top of the Olympic podium. With Los Angeles 2028 on the horizon, he looks as hungry as ever.
