Alonso rules out January loan for Estêvão and outlines Chelsea development plan
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has ruled out sending Estêvão Willian on loan in January, saying the Brazil international remains in his plans despite limited playing time. According to the Guardian, Alonso said there had been no discussions about a temporary departure and praised the teenager's attitude and work in training.

The 19-year-old has started twice in 11 appearances across all competitions this season and has played just 47 minutes in the Premier League. He remained an unused substitute during Chelsea's penalty-shootout defeat by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, even though Alonso did not use all his available substitutions.
Alonso accepted responsibility for deciding which players receive minutes but said every member of the squad needed to remain prepared to contribute. His comments set out a continuing role for Estêvão at Chelsea rather than a plan to find him playing time elsewhere when the January transfer window opens.
The coach described the winger's progress as an adjustment to the demands of English football, involving both possession and defensive work. Alonso said Estêvão needed to develop his decisions on the ball, including when to retain possession and when to pass, while also meeting the competition's physical and off-ball requirements.
That development, Alonso explained, takes time for a teenager adapting to the Premier League's pace. He said mistakes were part of learning and acknowledged his own responsibility to help the player through the process. The assessment went beyond defensive effort, with the coach stressing that effective choices in possession were important too.
Estêvão joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year and scored a solo goal against Barcelona during his first season. A hamstring injury subsequently prevented him from going to the World Cup, the Guardian reported. His limited club involvement this season has nevertheless been followed by an international recall from Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday.
Alonso has frequently used a 3-4-2-1 formation with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in the two attacking midfield positions. He said Estêvão could occupy a central pocket depending on the circumstances of a match, although the Brazilian's Premier League experience has mainly come out wide, where Alonso highlighted his ability in one-on-one situations.
