The force said the initial report arrived shortly after 1.55pm and concerned two men walking on a track beside the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area. Officers subsequently stopped a vehicle in Darras Hall. According to the police statement carried by the Guardian, the equipment was understood at that stage to have been intended for recreational use.
BBC Sport identified the 24-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international as one of the men, while noting that the police statement did not name him. The broadcaster reported that Dedic was with a friend and that officers searched their car. It also said it had been told the player had no ill intention and had fully co-operated with police.
Both outlets reported that Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former club defender Paul Dummett stopped to help while police were speaking to Dedic. Their presence was understood to be coincidental. The Guardian reported that they had been passing his home, noticed police there and offered assistance; they were understood to have helped calm the situation.
The incident came two days after Dedic played in Newcastle's 1-0 home defeat against Everton. He joined the club from Benfica in August and has since made 10 appearances across league and cup competitions, according to BBC Sport. Newcastle had not commented on the incident in the broadcaster's report.
Newcastle were 13th in the Premier League with 11 points from nine matches and were due to visit Fulham on Saturday before the international break. Dedic was also named in Bosnia-Herzegovina's squad for Nations League fixtures away to Sweden on 14 November and at home against Romania on 17 November. Police enquiries remained open despite the force's assessment that the incident posed no public threat.
