Arthur Fils Reaches First Masters 1000 Final in Cincinnati
Arthur Fils reached the first Masters 1000 final of his career by defeating Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in the Cincinnati Open semi-finals. The Guardian reported that the rain-delayed match turned in the French player’s favor midway through a tense opening set, after which he took control against the No. 7 seed.

The straight-sets victory continued an impressive Cincinnati run for Fils. Before facing Cobolli, he had also beaten fifth seed Alex de Minaur and Thiago Agustin Tirante without dropping a set. Tirante had advanced after defeating Novak Djokovic, giving Fils another in-form opponent to overcome on his route to the final.
Fils, 22, has now made a final, two semi-finals and two additional quarter-finals across his five completed Masters 1000 appearances this year. He also won his fourth career title at the Barcelona Open, an ATP 500 event, and has taken four of his past six matches against top-10 opposition.
The Cincinnati result carries significant ranking implications. According to The Guardian, Fils will rise to a career-high No. 11 and sits sixth in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals. He will face either Frances Tiafoe, the 2024 Cincinnati finalist, or Brandon Nakashima, who reached his first Masters 1000 final at the Canadian Open in Montreal a week earlier.
Fils’ progress follows two injury interruptions. A stress fracture in his back forced him to retire from the 2025 French Open and kept him out for roughly nine months. After returning and reaching the Madrid Open semi-finals this season, he sustained a hip injury during his opening match at the Italian Open and withdrew from Roland Garros for a second consecutive year.
During his earlier absence, Fils changed elements of his forehand and serve technique, worked on sliding into his backhand on hard courts and reduced his weight, The Guardian reported. His return to a Masters final in Cincinnati now gives him an opportunity to secure the biggest title of his career and adds another milestone to a season repeatedly interrupted by physical setbacks.
