Asa Tribe makes 184 before Essex slump to 100-7 against Glamorgan

Asa Tribe scored 184 and Zain ul Hassan took 3-14 as Glamorgan dominated the second day of their County Championship match against Essex at Sophia Gardens. BBC Sport reported that Glamorgan reached 505 before Essex finished on 100-7, leaving the visitors 405 runs behind with only three first-innings wickets remaining.

Tribe's highest score of the season came from 383 balls and occupied a day and a half. Having been dropped before scoring, the England Lions opener followed his 155 against Surrey with another substantial innings. Including his runs for the Lions, he also passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season. Glamorgan had resumed on 318-3, but accurate bowling from Sam Cook helped restrict their early scoring.

Colin Ingram made 43 before top-edging Zaman Akhter to fine leg in the 110th over. Glamorgan needed six runs from that over for a third batting bonus point; Ingram hit four from the first delivery but was dismissed from the next, and the hosts ended the over on 349-4. Billy Root subsequently provided greater momentum, contributing 59 from 88 balls, with seven boundaries, in a partnership of 103 with Tribe.

Essex eventually broke that stand when Root top-edged Simon Harmer to slip, before Akhter had Tribe caught behind. Chris Cooke, another of Glamorgan's departing middle-order batters, received a guard of honour from the visitors and struck a six and a four off Harmer in his 20. Dan Douthwaite added 21 towards the end. Akhter finished with 5-107 as Essex claimed six wickets during the second session to bring the lengthy innings to a close.

The visitors then lost Dean Elgar, playing his final match, to Timm van der Gugten, while Paul Walter fell to Ray Toole without scoring from 18 balls. Ul Hassan deepened the trouble by bowling Charlie Allison for 15, trapping Tom Westley lbw for 23 and bowling Noah Thain. Van der Gugten also dismissed George Bell lbw for 12, keeping Glamorgan firmly in control of the reply.

Matt Critchley and Harmer offered resistance late in the day, but Toole had Critchley lbw for 21 in the final over. Harmer remained unbeaten on 26 at the close. Essex therefore head into day three facing a large deficit after losing seven wickets in 33.1 overs, while Glamorgan have translated Tribe's extended stay at the crease into a commanding position with the ball.
