Aston Villa Open Talks for Club Brugge Defender Joel Ordonez

Aston Villa are working on a deal for Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez as they seek defensive reinforcements before the transfer deadline. Villa have accelerated their interest after selling England defender Ezri Konsa to Arsenal last week. The club opened the season with a 4-0 defeat by Brighton on Sunday and is attempting to strengthen Unai Emery's squad before the window closes on September 1. The scale and structure of any offer for Ordonez have not been disclosed.

Ordonez is 22 and has made 124 appearances for Club Brugge since arriving from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in 2022. He also represented Ecuador at the World Cup earlier this summer. Those appearances give Villa an experienced senior target despite the defender's age, but Club Brugge's reported valuation remains a significant part of the negotiations.

Villa had previously pursued Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis. According to BBC Sport, Southampton rejected an offer worth £18 million because the clubs remained some distance apart in their valuations. A deal for the 24-year-old could still be revived, but Villa have moved to other targets for now, putting Ordonez at the centre of their current work.

The defensive search comes during a period of substantial squad change at Villa Park. BBC Sport reports that Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Konsa have all left the club this season. Striker Ollie Watkins is also a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, although the report did not confirm that a deal for him had been reached.

Villa therefore face several moving parts as the deadline approaches. The confirmed position is that talks for Ordonez are continuing and Club Brugge are seeking at least £40 million; whether Villa will meet that figure or negotiate different terms remains uncertain. The failed Harwood-Bellis approach adds urgency, but neither the Ordonez negotiations nor Villa's remaining transfer plans have reached a reported conclusion.
