Canelo Alvarez Announces Unification Fight Against Dmitry Bivol for Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship
The Mexican superstar will move up to 175 pounds to challenge Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight crown in what promises to be boxing's biggest fight of 2026.

Canelo Álvarez sent shockwaves through the boxing world on Friday by announcing his intention to move up to light heavyweight and challenge WBA champion Dmitry Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight championship in what is being billed as the biggest fight of 2026.

The announcement came during a packed press conference in Las Vegas, where the four-division world champion revealed that he has reached an agreement in principle to face Bivol, with the fight tentatively scheduled for September 14th at T-Mobile Arena. The winner would become the first undisputed light heavyweight champion since Roy Jones Jr. accomplished the feat in 1999.

"This is the fight I've been wanting for years," Álvarez said through his translator. "Dmitry is a great champion and one of the best fighters in the world. I know it won't be easy moving up to 175 pounds, but I've always believed in challenging myself against the very best. This is about cementing my legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time."

Bivol, 32, has been dominant since capturing the WBA title in 2017 and enters the potential bout with an unblemished 23-0 record. The Russian technician is widely regarded as the most skilled fighter in the light heavyweight division, with excellent footwork, sharp boxing IQ, and the ability to neutralize opponents with his educated jab and superior ring generalship.

The fight represents a significant risk for Álvarez, who would be moving up two weight classes from his current super middleweight home base where he holds all four major titles. The 33-year-old Mexican icon has not fought above 168 pounds since his controversial majority decision victory over Dmitry Bivol's stablemate at light heavyweight in 2022, a bout that many observers felt he lost.

Promoting the fight will be a joint effort between Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, with streaming rights expected to be split between DAZN and ESPN+. Industry insiders suggest the bout could generate over $100 million in revenue, making it one of the richest fights in boxing history and potentially setting up future mega-fights for the winner.

Bivol expressed confidence about defending his title against the sport's biggest star, stating that he has been preparing for this opportunity since their first encounter was rumored years ago. "Canelo is a great fighter, but I am ready for this challenge," Bivol said via video conference from his training camp in Russia. "I have the size, speed, and skills to win this fight convincingly."

The bout is expected to be formally announced within the next two weeks, with ticket sales beginning shortly thereafter. If the fight materializes as planned, it would cap off a remarkable year for boxing that has already featured several high-profile unification bouts across multiple weight classes.
