Jon Jones Announces Return Date for Heavyweight Title Defense
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones finally put an end to months of speculation by announcing that he will defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 300 on April 13th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The long-awaited bout represents Jones' first title defense since capturing the vacant heavyweight championship at UFC 285 in March 2023.
The announcement came during a surprise appearance at UFC headquarters in Las Vegas, where Jones confirmed he has fully recovered from the pectoral injury that forced him to withdraw from their originally scheduled bout at UFC 295. The 36-year-old champion appeared in excellent shape and expressed his excitement about finally stepping back into the octagon.
"I've been waiting for this moment for almost a year," Jones said during the announcement. "The injury was frustrating, but it gave me time to really focus on becoming a better heavyweight. Stipe is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, and I can't wait to prove that I belong at the top of this division."
Miocic, 41, has been patiently waiting for his shot at reclaiming the heavyweight title after losing it to Francis Ngannou in 2021. The Ohio native is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweights in UFC history, with victories over legends like Daniel Cormier and Junior dos Santos during his previous championship reign.
The bout will serve as the main event for UFC 300, marking a milestone event for the promotion. UFC President Dana White confirmed that several other major fights are being finalized for the card, which is expected to be one of the biggest events in the company's history.
Training camp has already begun for Jones, who has been working with his long-time team in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The former light heavyweight champion has been focusing heavily on adding muscle mass and adapting his fighting style for the heavyweight division. His victory over Ciryl Gane to win the title showcased his grappling prowess, but facing Miocic will present an entirely different challenge given the former champion's boxing pedigree and knockout power. Tickets for UFC 300 go on sale next Friday, with the event expected to sell out within minutes.
