Baker bowling 'rockets' to press England claims after stellar county season
Rising seam bowler Ollie Baker has emerged as a surprise contender for England selection after consistently clocking speeds exceeding 90mph during a remarkable county season that has drawn comparisons with the nation's fastest bowlers.

The 22-year-old, who plays for Sussex, has taken 42 wickets in seven County Championship matches at an average of just 18.3, with his raw pace catching the eye of national selectors watching from the pavilion.
"He has huge ceiling," said Sussex coach Paul Farbrace. "When Ollie hits his straps, he's bowling rockets. The ball just doesn't seem to hang around long enough for batsmen to adjust."
Baker's performances have coincided with England's search for a replacement for the retired James Anderson, with the selectors increasingly impressed by his ability to generate bounce and movement off the pitch.
The young paceman attributes his improvement to extensive work with bowling coach Jason Hunt, focusing on his run-up mechanics and release point. "I've been working hard on getting my body into a better position at the crease," Baker explained. "The speed gains have come naturally as a result."
England team manager Brendon McCullum was present at Hove last week to watch Baker claim 7-45 against Warwickshire, a performance that has intensified discussions about his immediate international prospects.
With the Ashes series against Australia looming, Baker has positioned himself as a potential wildcard selection, though he remains realistic about the step up required. "Obviously there's a big difference between county cricket and international cricket," he acknowledged. "But I'm ready to take that opportunity if it comes."
