Tom Pearson signs new Northampton contract with England return still a target

Tom Pearson has signed a new contract with Northampton Saints, extending his stay with the reigning English league champions beyond the current season. BBC Sport reported that the 26-year-old back-rower sees the club as the right place to pursue his ambitions, including a return to the England set-up. Pearson joined Northampton in summer 2023 after London Irish went out of business and has since made more than 60 appearances for Saints. He started both of their recent league final victories, against Bath in 2024 and Exeter last season, helping the club secure two domestic titles during his first three years there.

His contribution to the latest championship included 22 appearances and six tries in the 2025-26 campaign, according to the club announcement carried by Ultimate Rugby. That followed a debut season of 21 appearances and seven tries, including a hat-trick against Bayonne. A late-season injury prevented him from playing in Northampton's Champions Cup final in the intervening campaign.

International recognition remains an important part of Pearson's plans. BBC Sport reported that he has one senior England cap and has represented the national second-string team in each of the past two campaigns. Pearson credited Northampton's coaches with improving his overall game, set-piece work and attacking contribution, saying their support for his wider ambitions helped persuade him to stay.

Director of rugby Phil Dowson described retaining Pearson as a major priority in the announcement published by Ultimate Rugby. He highlighted the forward's athleticism and versatility across the back row, while crediting work with coach James Craig for progress in his attacking and defensive maul play. Dowson also pointed to Pearson's development on the blindside as another option for the team.

Dowson said competition within Northampton's back row helps drive improvement and identified Pearson as an important influence alongside younger players Josh Taylor, Jack Lewis and Charlie Ulcoq. For Pearson, the decision also reflected his connection with his team-mates and confidence in the coaching environment. He said the squad had moved on from celebrating last season's title and was focused on further progress.
