Bethell Fails to Fire in First IPL Appearance of Season as Royal Challengers Bengaluru Suffer Defeat
England white-ball prospect Jacob Bethell struggled in his first Indian Premier League outing of the season, failing to make an impact as Royal Challengers Bengaluru fell to a comprehensive defeat.

Jacob Bethell's much-anticipated return to the Indian Premier League proved a disappointing one, as the young English all-rounder failed to make an impact in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's heavy loss to Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

Bethell, who had been in stellar form for England across both white-ball formats, managed just 12 runs from 15 balls before being caught attempting a pull shot. His leg-spin bowling also went wicketless in his four overs, conceding 42 runs as Mumbai Indians chased down RCB's modest total with ease.

The 20-year-old had impressed during his brief stint in last year's IPL, showcasing his clean ball-striking and athletic fielding abilities. However, the pressure of the IPL appeared to weigh heavily on him in this latest outing, with several loose shots suggesting rustiness after a long international season.

RCB captain Faf du Plessis offered words of support for the youngster after the match. "Jacob is a world-class talent and one bad game doesn't change that," du Plessis said. "The IPL is a demanding competition, and everyone needs time to adjust. He'll be better for this experience."

The defeat leaves RCB languishing in the bottom half of the IPL table, with their playoff hopes increasingly remote. The franchise had invested heavily in Bethell's signature during the auction, hoping he could provide the middle-order stability that has eluded them in recent seasons.

Bethell is expected to remain with RCB for the remainder of the season, with opportunities likely to come thick and fast given the franchise's packed schedule. His immediate focus will be on recapturing the form that made him one of England's most exciting prospects across all formats.
