Ben Allison took three wickets for 15 as Worcestershire reduced Gloucestershire to 107 for five on a rain-shortened opening day at Cheltenham. Tommy Boorman answered with an unbeaten maiden Championship half-century for the hosts.

What happened: Ben Allison led a strong Worcestershire bowling display before heavy rain curtailed the opening day of their County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College. Gloucestershire, who chose to bat after winning the toss, reached 107 for five before play was abandoned at 15:25 BST, according to a report from the ECB Reporters' Network published by BBC Sport.

Allison finished the shortened day with three wickets for 15 runs from 14 overs. The seamer made the first breakthrough at 11 when Cameron Bancroft edged behind to former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick. Matthew Waite then bowled Joe Phillips for nine after an inside edge carried the ball into his stumps, leaving the home side in early trouble.

The pressure increased when Allison removed Miles Hammond and James Bracey within three deliveries. Hammond was caught by Adam Hose, while Bracey departed without scoring after another catch in the slip cordon. Gloucestershire had fallen to 28 for four, and Allison's figures at that point were three for five from 6.5 overs. He completed seven maidens in his first nine overs.

Tommy Boorman and Ollie Price provided the recovery. They took Gloucestershire to 55 for four at lunch and extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 75 in the afternoon. Price scored 31 from 117 balls and struck six boundaries before Waite bowled him with the first ball of an over following a brief interruption while Boorman received treatment for cramp in a hand.

Boorman remained unbeaten on 51, reaching his first County Championship half-century in his 12th appearance in the competition. The 21-year-old hit nine fours and passed his previous first-class best of 49 at a fitting venue for the Cheltenham-born batter. His innings kept Gloucestershire from a deeper collapse after Worcestershire's new-ball bowlers repeatedly found movement from the Festival pitch.

Why it matters: Worcestershire ended the day with the advantage despite being unable to begin their first innings. Waite supported Allison with two wickets for 25 from 7.4 overs, while Gloucestershire collected no points and Worcestershire earned one. The rain arrived soon after Boorman reached 50, and the downpour left no realistic chance for play to resume on the opening day.
