Former Teammates Ejected After Explosive Brawl in Braves-Angels Clash
Atlanta's Reynaldo López and LA's Jorge Soler, who were teammates just two seasons ago, threw punches after a high-and-inside pitch sparked a bench-clearing incident.

A heated confrontation between former Atlanta Braves teammates erupted into a full-scale brawl Tuesday night, providing one of baseball's most dramatic moments of the early season as tensions boiled over between the Braves and Los Angeles Angels.

The incident centered around pitcher Reynaldo López and designated hitter Jorge Soler, who shared a clubhouse during Atlanta's successful 2024 campaign but found themselves on opposite sides of an ugly altercation that resulted in ejections for both players.

The drama began brewing early when Soler launched a two-run homer off López in the opening frame, showcasing the dominance that has defined their matchup throughout their careers. Soler entered the game with remarkable numbers against his former teammate: 14 hits in 23 at-bats, including five home runs and three doubles.

"Obviously, I have good numbers against him," Soler acknowledged through an interpreter following the incident. "After the home run and getting hit by a pitch, and then he missed way too high and close to my head. At this level, you can't miss like that."

The situation escalated when López drilled Soler with a 96-mph fastball during his second plate appearance. While neither player immediately reacted, tension simmered beneath the surface as both teams recognized the brewing confrontation.

The flashpoint came in the fifth inning when López delivered a high-and-inside wild pitch that sailed dangerously close to Soler's head before tipping off catcher Jonah Heim's glove. The near-miss proved to be the final straw for the 2021 World Series MVP.

"I asked him if everything was okay, and the answer he gave me, I didn't like it," Soler explained. "That's why I went out there."

Soler charged the mound with clear intent, and despite López initially raising his hands in apparent surrender, both players began exchanging punches within seconds. In a surreal moment, López landed a blow on Soler's batting helmet while still clutching the baseball in his throwing hand.

The benches and bullpens emptied immediately as players from both teams rushed onto the field. Atlanta manager Walt Weiss found himself in the unusual position of tackling his former player to protect everyone involved.

"I love Soler. We were teammates here," Weiss reflected afterward. "But that's a big man, and I felt I had to get him off his feet because he was going to hurt somebody. He was on a warpath."

Weiss understood both perspectives in the heated exchange. While defending López from allegations of intentional targeting, he acknowledged why Soler reached his breaking point.

"I know it didn't look good because of Soler's numbers against López, and he hit a homer, then hit him," Weiss admitted. "López isn't throwing at him. I don't allow our pitchers to throw at people just because they can't get them out. But I understand why Soler got angry."

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki supported his player's reaction to the dangerous sequence of events.

"You get thrown at your head, you have a family, your career - it's dangerous," Suzuki stated. "I know it's part of the game, but I don't blame Jorge one bit."

López expressed regret about the incident while maintaining his innocence regarding intentional targeting.

"It's just a shame, the situation and how things unfolded," López said through an interpreter. "On my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point."

Atlanta maintained control of the game throughout the chaos, leading 4-2 when the fight occurred and ultimately securing a 7-2 victory. The incident provided unexpected intensity to what had been a routine early-season series.

"It gets your juices flowing on both teams," Weiss concluded. "As long as nobody gets hurt, it's kind of a good time. I was proud of our guys and how we handled everything tonight."
