Brazilian Bowler Cardoso Shatters T20I Record with Nine-Wicket Masterclass
Cricket history was rewritten in dramatic fashion as Brazil's Laura Cardoso delivered the most devastating bowling performance ever witnessed in Twenty20 international cricket. The 21-year-old seamer claimed an unprecedented nine wickets for just four runs in three overs, obliterating the previous record and establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in women's cricket.
Facing Lesotho in the Kalahari Women's T20 tournament in Gaborone, Botswana, Cardoso turned what should have been a routine chase into a nightmare for the opposition. With Brazil having posted 203 runs, Lesotho needed a solid start to have any hope of competing. Instead, they found themselves facing one of the most clinical bowling displays in cricket history.
The destruction began in spectacular fashion when Cardoso struck with five consecutive deliveries spanning two overs. She claimed the final three wickets of the second over before adding two more victims with the opening balls of the fourth over, leaving Lesotho reeling at 8-5. The precision and consistency of her bowling was remarkable, with each delivery perfectly executed to exploit the batters' weaknesses.
Cardoso's dominance didn't end there. She continued her rampage with two additional wickets in the same over, recording her second maiden of the spell. When she returned for the fifth over, she added two more scalps to her tally, bringing her personal haul to nine dismissals. Only a stumping by teammate Marianne Artur denied her the historic achievement of claiming all ten wickets, as Lesotho was bowled out for a mere 13 runs in 6.2 overs.
The previous T20I record belonged to Bhutan's Sonam Yeshey, who took eight wickets for seven runs against Myanmar in 2025. In women's cricket, Indonesia's Rohmalia Rohmalia had held the benchmark with figures of 7-0 against Mongolia in 2024. Cardoso's achievement surpasses both marks convincingly.
Cricket Brasil president Roberta Moretti, who witnessed the historic performance from first slip, believes this is just the beginning for the young bowler. "I don't think this is the end. She's still only 21 and I believe Laura is someone who can one day play at the elite level in England and Australia," Moretti told BBC Sport.
The president praised Cardoso's journey from grassroots cricket to international stardom, highlighting her exceptional work ethic and passion for the game. "She came from one of our grassroots programmes and through all of the pathways and is one of the greatest cricketers Brazil has produced."
Brazil remains unbeaten after five matches at the six-team tournament, with Cardoso's record-breaking performance serving as the highlight of their dominant campaign. As news of this historic achievement spreads throughout the cricket world, all eyes will be on the young Brazilian to see what heights she can reach next.
