Carlos Ulberg Captures Light Heavyweight Title With Stunning First-Round Knockout Despite Knee Injury
The New Zealand fighter overcame an apparent ACL tear to stop Jiri Prochazka in Miami, earning his first world title in dramatic fashion.

Carlos Ulberg made the walk to the octagon at UFC 327 in Miami expecting a fight. He did not expect to lose his knee in the process.

The New Zealander's right knee gave out following an awkward landing in the opening minutes of his bout against Jiri Prochazka. Ulberg stumbled multiple times, unable to put full weight on his leg as the crowd at the arena sensed something was wrong.

Prochazka noticed. The Czech fighter admitted afterward he felt mercy for his wounded opponent, pulling back his guard at a critical moment. It was a decision that cost him everything.

As Ulberg backed toward the cage with his right leg compromised, Prochazka stepped in to finish the job. That aggression opened the door. Ulberg, still somehow upright, fired a stunning left hook that landed flush. Prochazka hit the canvas. Ulberg pounced immediately, raining down punches until the referee stepped in.

First-round knockout. First world title.

Ulberg's words in his post-fight interview captured the moment perfectly.

I blew out my knee, but I knew all I needed was that one shot and I ended up getting it. I knew Jiri would come forward and as soon as I landed my left hand, he is gone.

The victory extended Ulberg's UFC winning streak to 10 consecutive fights. He earned this opportunity by knocking out former title challenger Dominick Reyes in September, a performance that catapulted him into title contention.

Prochazka entered the fight as the favorite, holding the number-two ranking with 31 finishes across 39 career bouts. His fan-favorite status was evident from the opening bell, with the crowd serenading him with lets go Jiri chants throughout the early going.

The title was vacant after Alex Pereira vacated it to move up to heavyweight. UFC president Dana White indicated after the fight that Ulberg likely suffered an ACL injury, which would require surgery and typically demand nine months or more of recovery.

Commentator Daniel Cormier offered a brutally honest assessment of what might have been: had Prochazka waited in his corner, this fight would have been done. His knee is blown out, he cannot even stand.

President Donald Trump attended the event, watching from octagon-side as Ulberg completed one of the more remarkable title wins in recent UFC memory.

The UFC will host an event at the White House on June 14 to celebrate 250 years of American independence. Whether Ulberg will be healthy enough to attend remains uncertain.
