Michael Carrick has defended Bruno Fernandes' commitment to Manchester United following the captain's return to the side. Fernandes has disputed accounts of talks between the pair after his omission against Bournemouth.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has publicly backed Bruno Fernandes' commitment to the club after the captain challenged accounts of their relationship. In comments reported by BBC Sport's Simon Stone, Carrick pointed to the midfielder's recent performances and his handling of a retaken penalty against Roma as evidence of his continuing contribution to the team.

Fernandes had been left among the substitutes for October's home defeat by Bournemouth after criticising Carrick and his coaching staff following United's 4-1 Champions League loss in Como. The Portugal midfielder returned to the starting side for the Premier League defeat by Chelsea a week later. Against Roma on Tuesday, his retaken penalty helped launch United's comeback after half-time.

After that match, the 32-year-old rejected reports about his relationship with the head coach. He also denied that the two had held talks specifically to resolve their differences. BBC Sport reported that club sources had confirmed such discussions, leaving a difference between those accounts and the captain's description of events. Carrick did not disclose what he and Fernandes had said to each other.

Instead, Carrick described conversations with players as a routine part of work at the club's Carrington training ground. He said those exchanges involved recognising what was working and identifying areas for improvement, sometimes with individuals and sometimes with groups. While keeping the substance private, he said the team had progressed and expressed confidence in what Fernandes continued to offer United.

The backing comes with United still needing to improve their domestic results. BBC Sport noted that their nine league matches had produced only one victory, against Ipswich in August. Nottingham Forest's 3-1 win over Manchester City also meant United would spend the international break in the relegation zone unless they beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

In his matchday programme comments, Carrick welcomed aspects of Tuesday's performance while stressing that the team still had considerable improvement to make. He called for United to follow the Roma victory with another result and establish momentum for the period after the international break, rather than treating the European comeback as sufficient on its own.
