Charlie Dean named England captain for Ireland ODI series
Charlie Dean will captain England in a three-match one-day international series against Ireland in September. BBC Sport reports that regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is among several senior players who will miss the series, giving the 25-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder another opportunity to lead the national side.

Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones are being rested. Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are also managing fitness and recovery. Sciver-Brunt has dealt with a calf injury since April and has not bowled for England or in The Hundred this summer, while Wyatt-Hodge played three Hundred matches before a calf injury ended her tournament.
Dean has already stood in for Sciver-Brunt during 50-over and 20-over campaigns against New Zealand and a T20 series against India earlier this summer. England won all three campaigns. She has also captained London Spirit for the past two seasons of The Hundred, with the team finishing sixth this year.
The 15-player group includes two uncapped selections. Lancashire seam bowler Grace Potts, 24, and Surrey wicketkeeper Kira Chathli, 27, could make their first England appearances. Warwickshire all-rounder Charis Pavely has played two T20 internationals against Ireland but could make her 50-over debut during the series.
Ryana MacDonald-Gay returns to the squad after last playing for England during the Ashes in early 2025. Eighteen-year-old spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman is also selected after finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker in this season’s Hundred. The squad comes after the July retirements of former captain Heather Knight and opening batter Tammy Beaumont. Other selections include Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, Lauren Filer, Dani Gibson, Jodi Grewcock, Freya Kemp, Mady Villiers and Issy Wong.
Head coach Charlotte Edwards told BBC Sport that the matches offer players a chance to demonstrate their 50-over skills and gain experience after a year with a strong T20 focus. The first ODI is scheduled for Leicester on 1 September, followed by matches at Derby on 3 September and Worcester on 6 September. The series completes England’s home international summer.
