Chelsea hold OL Lyonnes to goalless draw on Bompastor return

Chelsea left OL Lyonnes with a 0-0 draw in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday, September 30, as Sonia Bompastor returned to face her former club. The result at Groupama Stadium leaves both sides unbeaten on four points after two league-phase matches, following victories in their opening fixtures.

According to Olympique & Lyonnais, the contest developed into a tactical battle between the home side’s attacking combinations and Chelsea’s defensive organisation. Salma Paralluelo was denied by Hannah Hampton after being played through by Melchie Dumornay, while Chelsea’s defenders repeatedly intervened to prevent promising Lyonnes attacks from becoming clear opportunities in front of goal.

Chelsea also had a penalty award overturned following a video review in the second half. Sporting Life’s match commentary records the initial decision against Damaris Egurrola in the 74th minute and the reversal a minute later. Lauren James had entered for Melvine Malard in the 58th minute, while Lyonnes subsequently replaced Marie-Antoinette Katoto with Ada Hegerberg.

The closing stages brought chances at both ends without producing a winner. James was stopped by Lyonnes goalkeeper Mala Grohs in the 88th minute after a pass from Alyssa Thompson. Hampton then saved Hegerberg’s header from Lily Yohannes’s cross in the 90th minute. Maika Hamano had another opportunity for Chelsea deep into added time, but sent her effort wide from Wieke Kaptein’s cross, according to Sporting Life.

The reunion extended beyond Bompastor. Chelsea’s official match information noted that Lucy Bronze, Kadeisha Buchanan, Ellie Carpenter and Malard had all played for Lyon under Bompastor and assistant Camille Abily. This was Bompastor’s first meeting with her old side since moving to Chelsea in summer 2024. UEFA records her European titles with the French club as a player in 2011 and 2012 and as coach in 2022.

The draw followed markedly different opening-night wins. UEFA’s reporting confirms that Chelsea beat Austria Wien 1-0 through Kaptein’s early long-range goal, while Lyonnes defeated Servette 8-0, with Katoto scoring three times and Dumornay twice. Neither team could add to those goal totals in their second fixture, but both collected another point and maintained a clean sheet in the league phase.
