Coventry moved up to 14th with a 4-1 home victory over Newcastle. Sidi Cherif scored on his first Premier League start as Frank Lampard’s side followed up their win at Nottingham Forest.

Coventry City moved out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at the CBS Arena, climbing to 14th as they built on their victory at Nottingham Forest before the international break. According to BBC Sport, it was the first time Coventry had scored four goals in a top-flight match since beating Sheffield Wednesday by the same score in May 2000.

The result marked a substantial improvement in Coventry's home form. Their previous league matches at the CBS Arena had ended in a 1-0 defeat by fellow promoted club Hull and a 5-0 loss to Brighton. They had also suffered a 3-1 home defeat against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup. Newcastle, meanwhile, were beaten 4-1 for the second successive away game.

Sidi Cherif made an immediate contribution on his first Premier League start following his summer arrival from Fenerbahce. The 19-year-old won an early penalty and scored with a shot from outside the penalty area, registering his first goal in four appearances for Coventry. Lampard praised the teenager's appetite for work in training and matches, while also noting that Cherif would be disappointed with a chance he missed.

At 19 years and 301 days, Cherif became Coventry's youngest Premier League scorer since Robbie Keane scored against Middlesbrough in April 2000, aged 19 years and 282 days. BBC Sport also reported that his strike was Coventry's first Premier League goal from outside the box since David Thompson scored against Newcastle in January 2001, adding another milestone to the forward's breakthrough performance.

Lampard welcomed the confidence generated by the victory but stressed that his players needed to remain grounded. He pointed to the limited Premier League experience of several members of his squad, including Jack Rudoni, Brandon Thomas Asante and Ephron Mason-Clark. The manager said he was seeing rapid development, while emphasising that Coventry would still be underdogs in most matches.

Coventry next face Tottenham away before hosting Fulham, with both opponents still seeking a league win. Fixtures against Sunderland, Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Ipswich then take them into December. After two consecutive league victories, Coventry enter that sequence outside the bottom three, with Lampard seeking to turn their improved confidence into sustained competitiveness.
