Coventry moved into 14th place with a 4-1 home victory over Newcastle. Sidiki Cherif scored on his first Premier League start before substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni sealed the win.

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday to move out of the Premier League relegation zone and into 14th place. The victory followed their win at Nottingham Forest before the international break. BBC Sport reported that it was Coventry's first four-goal performance in the top flight since beating Sheffield Wednesday by the same score in May 2000.

Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek fouled Sidiki Cherif. According to Newcastle's official match report, Hornicek failed to gather a loose ball before bringing down the forward. Rudoni then sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the hosts ahead at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Newcastle threatened an equaliser before half-time, but Bobby Thomas made crucial interventions. He stopped Jacob Murphy's attempt following a Harvey Barnes cross, then cleared Matias Fernandez-Pardo's shot after the attacker had rounded Carl Rushworth. Coventry extended their lead in the 48th minute when Cherif struck after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw.

Sven Botman reduced the deficit in the 70th minute with a shot from outside the area. Coventry's substitutes then settled the contest: Ellis Simms scored in the 81st minute after Newcastle lost possession, and Stephen Mfuni added the fourth five minutes later. Newcastle's report confirmed that a win would have taken the visitors into fourth place.

Cherif was making his first Premier League start following his summer arrival from Fenerbahce. BBC Sport noted that the 19-year-old became Coventry's youngest scorer in the competition since Robbie Keane in April 2000. His goal was also the club's first from outside the penalty area in the Premier League since David Thompson scored against Newcastle in January 2001.

For Frank Lampard, the result marked a change in home fortunes after league defeats by Hull and Brighton. In comments reported by BBC Sport, the Coventry manager welcomed his players' development but stressed the need to stay grounded. He said the confidence gained from the result had to be balanced against overconfidence, with his promoted side still needing to maximise its performances.
