Dan Neil double sends Rangers past Celtic into League Cup semi-finals

Rangers defeated Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox on Sunday to reach the Scottish League Cup semi-finals, with captain Dan Neil scoring twice and Kevin Kelsy adding the other goal. Derek McInnes' side will face Aberdeen in the next round after eliminating Martin O'Neill's team.

According to BBC Sport Scotland's reporting from Ibrox, Rangers created an early opening when Celtic goalkeeper Sam Johnstone sent a clearance to Kelsy, who shot wide. The breakthrough subsequently came after Ryan Naderi dispossessed Cameron Carter-Vickers, with Kelsy supplying Neil for the opening goal.

Naderi also helped create Rangers' second, flicking on James Penrice's delivery for Kelsy to finish. Neil then completed his double to extend the lead to three. Rangers started with six players making their Old Firm debuts, but finished the quarter-final with a clean sheet and a place in the last four.

Celtic changed their attack at half-time, replacing Sebastian Tounekti with Haissem Hassan while trailing 1-0. BBC Sport Scotland reported that Tounekti had struggled against Dujon Sterling. Kasper Hogh had started at centre-forward, with Camilo Duran deployed wide, but neither completed the match. After Hogh was withdrawn, Duran moved into the central role before he too was replaced, by Shim Mheuka.

O'Neill had also changed the defence that started most of Celtic's early-season matches. Kieran Tierney returned at left-back, with Liam Scales moving inside alongside Carter-Vickers rather than Auston Trusty. Carter-Vickers and Trusty had started together in seven of Celtic's nine matches this season. Johnstone retained his place after playing against St Johnstone, although Viljami Sinisalo had recorded four clean sheets in eight appearances. Scales cleared a Kim Min-Su effort off the line after Johnstone pushed a cross towards the Rangers player.

Speaking afterwards, O'Neill said he would examine his own selection decisions first following the defeat. He also said he had wanted players to experience the atmosphere. Celtic's half-time change and later attacking substitutions did not produce a goal, leaving their League Cup campaign over at the quarter-final stage.
