Max Verstappen Claims Pole Position for Saudi Arabian Grand Prix After Record-Breaking Qualifying Lap
The defending world champion sets a new circuit record at Jeddah Corniche Circuit to lead an all-Red Bull front row alongside Sergio Perez.

Max Verstappen delivered a stunning pole position performance Thursday evening under the floodlights at Jeddah Corniche Circuit, setting a new lap record of 1:27.472 to secure the top starting spot for Sunday's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The three-time world champion was in a class of his own during qualifying, leading an all-Red Bull Racing front row with teammate Sergio Perez joining him on the grid's premium real estate.

Verstappen's record-breaking lap came in the final moments of Q3, when the Dutch driver found an extra three-tenths of a second to eclipse his previous best time and leave his rivals scrambling for an answer. The 26-year-old's mastery of the high-speed Jeddah circuit was evident throughout the session, as he consistently found time in the sweeping corners that characterize this challenging street circuit.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start third after a solid qualifying performance that saw him split the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who will begin Sunday's race from fourth and fifth respectively. The Monegasque driver showed flashes of the pace that made Ferrari competitive last season, but couldn't match the raw speed of the Red Bull cars on a track that traditionally favors aerodynamic efficiency.

Mercedes endured a difficult qualifying session, with both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell failing to advance beyond Q2 for the first time this season. The seven-time world champion will start 12th, while Russell managed 11th in what represents a significant setback for a team that had shown promising pace during practice sessions earlier in the week.

"The car felt absolutely perfect tonight," Verstappen said during his post-qualifying interview. "We made some small setup changes after final practice that really helped with the balance through the high-speed sections. Sergio did a fantastic job as well to lock out the front row for the team. We know how important track position is here in Jeddah, so starting 1-2 puts us in an excellent position for Sunday's race."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised his drivers' performances while acknowledging that Sunday's 50-lap race will present different challenges, particularly with tire management on a circuit that traditionally produces high degradation rates. The team's dominance in qualifying suggests they have found significant performance gains with their 2026 car package, which could set the tone for another championship-winning campaign.

Looking ahead to race day, Verstappen will be seeking his 58th career Formula 1 victory and his third consecutive triumph at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The combination of his pole position advantage and Red Bull's superior race pace should make him the overwhelming favorite, but the unpredictable nature of street circuit racing means nothing is guaranteed until the checkered flag falls on Sunday evening.
